What do yo think of Saddam's death sentence and the trial in general?

I didn't even realise his trial had come to an end, and then all of a sudden it came on Radio 1 "Saddam given the death penalty"

I personally think he's getting what he deserves. You can't get away with killing so many people, not matter how long ago it happened.

I personally believe that giving the death penalty to anybody no matter how brutal or twisted they is against the idea of a justice system. But lets take the idea of believing in the death penalty or not completely out of this. How does sentencing Saddam by hanging help the Iraqi people? First of all violence ignited throughout the country as soon as the verdict had been made. Second, giving Saddam the death penalty does not give support to the idea of a newborn democracy that the Iraqis with the help of the "coalition forces" are trying to build. Lastly what about all those still wondering where their loved ones went? What about all those people that want Saddam heard and want to know what went on? What if new mass graves are found through other investigations? Send him to prison for the rest of his miserable life, let him live with the guilt of having killed thousands of people. Maybe that will make him understand a bit what he did to the Iraqis, from the kurds to the sunnis to the shi'a to everybody that had anything to do with him. Taking him out of his misery and letting him die as a hero (in some peoples eyes) as the one who defied the american "infidels" is not the answer.

I'm not very religious, but I do believe in the "an eye for an eye" theory. If someone could go out with the intention of murder, they don't have what it takes to live in a normal, civil society, and is therfore nothing more than an animal.

I agree with all of you in some ways. This is a brutal man who has killed many people throughout his years in power. So if capital punishment is an option, he'd be the leading man to get it.

But then again, how can this be representative of a modern democracy? How can this trial be representative of a modern democracy, with all its procedural biases etc.? And then the biggest question of all, why Saddam?

Are you telling me that this is the only bad stateman we got? I could list 20 others off the top of my head who used their political power to get rid of opposition. Why isn't anybody running after them? Yea, there's no oil, but if we were talking principles, the oil wouldn't matter...

I think Sadaam needs to die. In my personal opinion he's up there on the evil list with the likes of Hitler - it's been proven he's ordered his own people to die by the thousands, and I think anyone whose done something like this needs to be dealt with. I don't think we should torture him as that's what he did to our own people and we need to take a higher ground than that, but hanging him will work fine. It'll make him an example for all of the ruthless dictators out there that such cut-throat evil is not acceptable and I think it'll be a turning point for the Iraqi people and a new future.

Well now he's dead. But I give the man credit for not begging for forgiveness or mercy on his way to the noose. Tough stuff

If you watch the video that was recorded by a security guard you'd be even more surprised how he could stay calm like that. You'd be quite surprised at what you'll hear from the executioners that in the cnn version, seem ever so politely explaining the process of whats going to happen to Saddam. Listen to the audio.

Talk about democracy and fair trial when your executioners were torchering you throughout your last day, chant insults and curse you while your trying to realise that these are your last few seconds on this earth. I dont care who you are at the end of the day, the man is meeting his maker, and with a list of crimes no one would like to leave this earth with, there's no need for insults or humiliation.

The trial was a joke and so was the execution, look at iraq now, we're nowhere near a solution last year alone 14,000 iraqis have died, Mr. Bush wants to send more than 20,000 troops over there now as his new plan, everyday no less than 30 people wind up dead over there, from mass graves to suicide bombings. And for what? Cause you better have a very good reason to be willing to take responsibility for thousands and thousands of deaths, for gods sake more people have died than what saddam was hanged for and they're put off as: civilian casualties. What a bunch of ********...justice my ***...
