Two companies with a similar approach to car manufacturing. Both very prestigous and with fans around the world. A BMW fan would never buy a Mercedes and vice versa. I believe that the two companies have lots more in common than just the German nationality.
The BMW 3 series, an affortable series with top cars is much like the Mercedes C Class. I see the same with the 5 Series-E Class and 7 Series-S class. Even further you have the AMG sport series by Mercedes and on the other side you have the M sport series by BMW. Do you want more? The SL class.. I like to compare that with the 6 series. And I forgot to mension the small town car A class compared to the new 1 series another small car.
A car for everyone. The two companies have cars for elegance, comfort, performance.
I admit I am a BMW fan. Lets see what you think :)

It's true that both manufacturers have built quite an impressive armanda, if you will, of quality cars.
Although I will not deny that I have a soft spot for the legendary Star, I do justifiably believe that Mercedes has and will continue to have an upper hand over BMW. :D
Remember that the first fuel-power car, the Daimler-Benz, in 1898, was in fact a Mercedes. :!:
BMW has only been able to match Mercedes in certain car categories in recent years, and therefore one should not take this recent development as a basis for an overall assessment.

Well the fact the the Right Brothers flew the first airplane doesn't mean that their planes were the best in world in the years that followed. And its for sure that people followed and expaned on their designs.. I believe that you get my point..

Point taken. 8)
But remember, we are talking about enterprises, companies, establishments.
These gigantic corporations take decades to penetrate a market as competitive as the automotive sector.
Mercedes was there from the very beginning, and experience as well as knowledge is crucial when it comes to building cars.
BMW was formed early on in the 1910s, but only came around to producing car in the late 1920s. Mercedes was long building cars by then.
The historical advantage, the idea that you are driving something that has not just any history, but a history of success in all fields of motorsports, is satisfying. BMW is trying to match that by entering Formula 1 recently, and expanding its motorsport involvement in general.
But you can't change history, and you can't rewrite history. Mercedes is Mercedes because of its quality, success and ingenuity. :D

Wait a sec.. Just listen to what you are saying.. 1910 BMW established.. 10 years after the first fuel power car by Mercedes. Ok lets take 1920 as a start for making cars... 1920 - 2005.. are you telling me that 85 years are not a long enough history? Are you trying to say that the 15 years difference between the two companies make the difference in success and quality? Come on..
Mercedes was there from the very beginning, and experience as well as knowledge is crucial when it comes to building cars.
Man.. lets be objective here..
I know you have a merc.. and I know you love the Mercedes as much as I love BMW but please be objective.. Answers like the previous are clearly subjective and according to taste..

Well, judging subjective over objective necessitates a thorough read of the post claimed to be as such, which, given your reply, has clearly not been the case. :(
1.) BMW has at least a 25 year disadvantage. To those who need a more profound wording, a quarter of a century.
2.) I explicity emphasized the success in the history of the two companies, particularly in motorsports. Motor racing drives technological development, and Mercedes is among the most successful brands in the history of motorsports. BMW cannot match that record. :!:

Ahem...Im going to be objective as possible about this. Both make amazing cars. Although in the past it seemed to me as though BMW is rather tailing along behind Mercedes Benz and copying and slightly modying their designs, BMW has truly made a huge leap forward in the past few years. (it took them a while to understand that they need to make cars that look slightly different than Mercedes Benz to get more customers, but yeah... :P ) That said, Mercedes hasn't been exactly sleeping either, with an unmatched supercar the SLR Mclaren and the new CLS and SLK and all the new designs. But then again BMW has the new 6 series which with a body kit i saw the other day in black, looks like a mixture between a ferrari and a rocket. Both make amazing cars, really, and im at a loss at which side to tend more to. Maybe they should merge and share their technologies, :P ...

I don't think that's a very good idea :P
Only if Mercedes BUYS BMW, which of course, would be great. :D

From a models point of view you can go to each of their respectives websites to find that Mercedes is selling way more models than BMW. So Mercedes wipes the floor with BMW. And although BMW has been trying to catch up Mercedes does keep on coming up with new models and designs, out-competing their german rivals.
On the other hand, alot of times you will find that the prices of the BMW might be better, that is if you're looking for a luxury sedan. The 760 for example, being a definit winner over the S600. But if i'm going to have to side with one of them it will definetly be Mercedes, the true genius of automobile engineering.
A supporting example of my decision would be that just recently BMW thought they had finally got the upper hand with their new V-10 engine. They were crushed by the brand new SL65 AMG with a V-12 Twin Turbo engine accompanied by a monstrous 604 HP, making it the most powerful luxury sedan. Mercedes speaks for itself.

I think BMW and Mercedes are losing their edge, to be honest.
Lexus has been doing a really good job over in Japan, and they'll be the ones to watch 8)

You know I agree with you TK, Lexus have upped their standards quite a bit. The GS is striking, I love the car, the combination of power, luxury and design. :p
But BMW and Mercedes have not lost their edge at all. DaimlerChrysler spends a staggering 6 billion Euros a year on research and development. That's about 16.5 million Euros every day.
What do they research? They research things like traction, engine power and heat emission efficiency, car feel, sound and smell, aerodynamics, fuel and power sources, cabling systems, space, consumer feedback, handling, steering, brake discs materials etc.
Every single element of a Mercedes quality car undergoes this research, whether syndicated or in-house. That's the price not only Mercedes pays, but also BMW and Lexus. And I think all three are doing a mighty good job :D

Out of some weird reason there are more votes for BMW than there are for Mercedes. I mean look at the new C-Class. It's beautiful, powerful and elegant ;)

A lot of people say the same thing about the new 3 Series (E90-93). Personally however I was much more a fan of the E46.

they are both good cars obviously, they both manufacture quality cars, some better than others. But what i like more about them is their sport divisions aka AMG & M. When you look at them and drive them , one tends to disregard the basic models, although i must admit the current range of cars is not lacking in any respect, but once you experience their beefed up models, their is no way you can go back.
I am not talking about body kits and what not, i mean the entire package :D

I've owned both - they are all good. However in rcent years I have to say that Mercedes have definetetly produced the better looking cars. I currently own a Mercedes SL65 AMG. Great Car and BMW have nothing to offer in this particular category at the moment!

I think with the new C and SL class, Mercedes made an important step forward. There is no doubt that the new 3-Series looked better than the old C-Class, and that was a major blow for the Silver Star
