There is a lot of information beneath 56 years of Formula 1 history.

The following is a picture taken during a race during the 1960s. In this History Mystery, we are trying to find out:

1. Who is the driver in car number 6?
2. Who is following him?
3. During which season was this picture taken?

Alright, since nobody has been able to make an educated guess, I'll release the first hint by narrowing down the timeframe.

The picture was taken between 1960 and 1965. Go ahead and give it a shot :)

I don't know, because I wasn't born then.

Well just cause you weren't born before World War II doesn't mean you don't know who Hitler is :? . C'mon try to find out and give it a shot, you might get it right and win the first case of the History Mystery.

1962.

And Hitler who?

There are three questions you need to figure out. I'll wait a bit until I respond to the 1962 answer, to give other people a chance. Look around the net, maybe some historical racing magazines for information about this picture.

Hitler my new helmet visor, it comes with a mustache opening for better airflow. :P

But I'm so desperate to know.

Hmm... Is Jim Clark the driver in the #8 car?

Hmmm...

I've found a similar picture that was dated 1962.

So....

To answer the questions, I think...

1. Who is the driver in car number 6? Maurice Trintignant
2. Who is following him? Jim Clark
3. During which season was this picture taken? 1962

Hang on...does that mean that my 1962 answer was right?!?

Holy crap!

GET IN THERE MY SON! YOU BEAUTY!

Interesting answers :)

I think we can all agree that the two cars are identical, at least they look like it.

This picture was not taken in 1962.

The current numbering system for cars has only been in place since 1973. This makes this case more difficult, as before 1973, drivers had different number at each Grand Prix.

What we do know is that the picture was taken at Zandvoort, Holland.

Is it 1965?

Well, apparently this is a shot of Jim Clark (No. 6) and Jack Brabham (No. 8) at the Dutch Grand Prix in 1964. I'm kind of surprised about this

The archives don't list Jim Clark as having gone into this Grand Prix with that car number (officially at least).

Archives show that Jim Clark was quite often in a No. 6 car throughout his career. It can be narrowed down to the following cases (where his team mate had No. 8)

1963 Dutch Grand Prix (Trevor Taylor / No. 8)
1965 Dutch Grand Prix (Mike Spence / No. 8)

:?:

I'm going to say 1965 so that it makes me right.

But we need to establish that the image is from 1965 :p . There has to be another clue in the picture

This mystery was never solved. Maybe we can pick it up again :)

Nope :(, we were able to narrow it down to:

1963 Dutch Grand Prix (Trevor Taylor / No. 8)
1965 Dutch Grand Prix (Mike Spence / No. 8)

No.

That is clearly not a Lotus 49. The Lotus 49 had the engine as the rear structure of the car.

Yes you are correct, this cars seems to be between 1960 and 1965

It's definitely 1965 Dutch GP.

Jim Clark in No.6 and Mike Spence in No.8

The car is a Lotus 33. The distinguishing feature from the Lotus 25 used in 1963 was that in 1965 the Lotus 33 had a small cover over the engine (visible in the picture). While the Lotus 25 did not.

Is my guess right or wrong?

Is my guess right or wrong?

I don't know the answer. I thought I did, but it turned out to be wrong.

We then narrowed it down, and two members have suggested that it is one of the two: The 1965 Dutch Grand Prix with Jim Clark and Mike Spence in the picture :)

I'm willing to bet you're right on this even though I have no idea.
