For $950 million, you can buy the country of Sealand, formally known as "The Principality of Sealand".

What was originially an anti-aircraft base to repel German bombers, was built in World War Two. The derelict platform was taken by retired army major Paddy Roy Bates, who since then lived there with his family.

The platform is located in the North Sea, just outside of British territorial waters.

It's now up for sale, and comes with a flag, national anthem, coins and passports.

lool, you make it sound like a package deal for a hotelroom. I read that the "Pirate Bay" is making a bid for it or at least is trying to raise money to make one. There is apparently no country that actually recognizes the platform as a microcountry, so what's the point in buying it? Although i read that there are supposedly ministries and governmental institutions, im a bit confused at what, if someone buys it, are they actually buying?

It's really simple, it's basically buying real estate! No institutions, no ministries, just about eight rooms spread over two concrete towers and a middle platform, in the middle of the sea. The extras were worked on by the owner (probably go bored living in the middle of the sea).

I guess it's not really a country, because it is not recognized. And let's face it, as soon as it is bought and used for illegal activities, I'm fairly sure the UK, the EU or NATO will have something to say about it. The only reason the guy was able to live with his family there for so long is because their not bothering anybody :) .
