While backing up some big folders of photos I started going through the snaps I took at the Uddeholm Swedish Rally in 2005. At that time I lived ten minutes from the nearest stage so I was out freezing my parts off at three different stages during Saturday and Sunday.

Pardon the pun, but the snow makes it look really cool! Not that I've watched a lot of Rally racing, but that's the first time I've seen it in the snow:eek:. Nice photos!

It's absoultely awesome to watch. You think it looks fast on TV but when Loeb passes 10 meters in front of you and you get hit by some flying gravel and ice it just crazy. :lol:

Found a youtube video from the Eurosport coverage of this rally. I'm probably in there somewhere. :D

Great collection of pictures DriverDB! Like Salty said, the snow adds a real cool feel to the whole event (and of course to the handling of the car for the lucky drivers :lol:.

How strict are safety procedures at the event? How close can you be?

On some straights I'd say you pretty much get right up on the track (if you're dumb enough) as they only seal off areas during more dangerous parts. On the outside of the corners you're generally not allowed to be to allow some sort of run off area (well, the trees generally shortens the run off). Bigger parts are sealed off where there are jumps and so on.

Some parts of the track are pretty remote so they aren't sealed off as they don't expect people to be able to get there (unless they show up really really early and walk the stage on foot or have access to snow mobiles and can go through the forest).

I think the safety is pretty decent at the Swedish event. It's not like like on other places where you see people standing on the road on the outside of corners. But it's hard to keep track of every inch of the road when there's so many miles of special stages. Before each stage starts they first run a chopper and then a safety car along the stage that can report back if they feel there are spectators in dangerous places. They then alert the drivers about it and I guess they can even call off the stage if they see something completely bananas.
