Just looked at the driver payouts for the Edmonton race, and those are pretty good numbers.
For finishing last (or retiring first) you get $16,000. Over the course of 16 events, that's $256,000 . I wonder does whether the teams still pay their drivers, or does the team cash the payouts and settle a 'flat' amount with their drivers for the season?

These days drivers are usually paid by the sponser.
It's like that in all motorsports. Ferrari wasn't paying Schumacher $100 million, Marlboro was.

In F1 we know that there is a money distribution key that goes out from Bernie to the teams, not the drivers. The teams then deal with how much their drivers get for winning a race or picking up a point.
So I guess that in ChampCars, the money that goes to the drivers from the series itself after every race goes either as a bonus or the teams cash it and it's just called 'Driver Prize Money' for reasons unknown
