This is a story about Senna's perfect lap at Monaco 1988


Most racing drivers will speak of the perfect lap, but none have ever achieve it. Drivers always speak in terms of another 10th, or 100th off somewhere, but most know that they made some small mistake, lost a 100th here and there and continue to search for that little something else!

At the Monaco GP in 1988, Ayrton Senna achieve the perfect lap! A Computer came up with the time of 1:25.300 for the perfect lap through the streets on Monte Carlo. With the technology available in 1988, the computer said no way you could go faster than that!

During Saturday Quaffing for the Monaco GP, Prost went out and recorded a 1:25.425. That was over a second faster than the Ferrari of Gerhard Berger. Most thought that was as fast as you could humanly go! Then, Ayrton Senna went out. the next few laps produced one of the greatest magical moments in the history of motor sports. The 1st lap Ayrton came closed to Prost's 1:25.425, then his second he set 1:25.376! Senna had Pole, but it was only starting. Ayrton continued, 1:25.100, then 1:24.500, and then finally, 1:23.998! over a second under the perfect lap! And, almost a second and a half faster than Prost!

Later, Senna would describe the series of laps as peaceful, and trance like, and then he knew it was time to stop. He could go no faster. He had achieve the perfect lap!
