View Full Version : Talk of a single tyre manufacturer

Yes indeed. Following suit of the WSBK and F1, the higher ups in MotoGP are talking of a SINGLE tyre for use on the 'prototype' GP bikes in the future.
This reeks in my opinion. This is were all the tech comes from. Sure some manufacturers do a littler better than others from time to time. That's the name of the game. I don't like it:mad:

I actually prefer a single tyre supplier. When I remember back to the Michelin / Bridgestone days in F1, it was frustrating to really know how quick anybody was. Everybody would say 'Bridgestone is better at this temperature' or 'Michelin can deal with mixed conditions better' and you'd see ridiculous difference in laptimes. The driver becomes a passenger really :stop:
I agree with you that competition stimulates R&D. But when it comes to tyres, on a series level, I prefer just one company handing out the goods

I'm here with Jo. As nice as it is to have many tire providers, someone will always benefit from that. Few years back when I used to do RC racing with 1/10 scale 4wd electric touring cars we didn't have any tyre regulations. There were couple of tires that had so amazing grip that you couldn't compete against those with "normal" tires you could buy from Finland. So all the big boys with sponsors got those grip tires from Japan...
Then regulations changed that there was 2 types of slicks for dry conditions and 1 type for wet. Tyre costs went down (yeah even miniature tyres cost hell of a lot ), competition was more even and everyone was happy, big boys were still at the front but not that much anymore. ;)
So what I think is that 1 manufacturer for one series is good.

I know nothing about motorcycle racing but its not a bad thing.
Look how good the IRL is and Firestone is the tire provider there.:)

Don't you hate it when they do that. My only counter would be when that single tire mfg. makes a mistake. Then everyone pays. Look at Michellin at Indy the year that only Bridgestone was able to race.

You could see that in another light. When a single manufacturer messes up, nobody races, which 'fairer' for the racing series as whole. That way you won't have backmarkers on the podium and serious title contenders loose out on points because of a tyre supplier

Wouldn't hurt if you could switch brands. Way to much sponsor $$ to do that though. It would be nice for the fans that paid their money and may have traveled though. If I had spent the $$ to go to Indy I woulda been pissed. Not so much that the tickets cost may be reimbursed, but I live in Texas, so there's airfare, hotel, etc.
I don't see this being an issue in bikes though. How many times has there been a tire mfg. pull out?
As far as cost control I agree with the one tire point. As far as the little guy, sure, help him too. I still like the mystique of trying to get it right in the big game though. If your tire isn't the best at track "a" then you gotta find it in another part of the car/bike, then hope that at track "b" the other guys tire isn't on.
Of course, I'll take free tires any day:lol::lol:

If I remember correctly, Michelin asked if they could bring new tyres for the race after all those incidents at Indy but FIA refused and that is why they pulled out.

You're right I forgot about that. They were going to fly in new ones. Stupid FIA.
