I'd be doin' some serious virus checking too, if you haven't already. What are do you have for protection. And don't tell me Norton, 'cause I had to dump it earlier this year due to MUCHO PROBLEMO:mad: That's another story:rolleyes:

Last BSOD I saw was about 3 'puters ago. I still have nightmares:eek::lol:

No, Norton is horrible. I had to always remove it, reload it all the time. I am using McAfee anit-virus and firewall. Plus I just did a scan lastnight, everything fine. I also use a few spyware removal programs quite often as well.

McAfee is no good either. Grisoft AVG is ok.

A few months ago I bought Windows Live OneCare. And it has worked with amazing results. No viruses or spyware of any kind. And the overall performance of my computer improved remarkably after installing it. It didn't slow my machine down like Grisoft, and especially, McAfee did.

Yeah, I agree, if McAfee is updating in the background, it slows down your other operations.:(

But I have had good luck with it. Never had any of the issues I did with Norton's.

I'm like Ryan with the antivirus program, AVG is free and very good option. Combine that with ZoneAlarm firewall and you get superb protection for free. Word of warning here, don't EVER combine Zonealarm with Norton, I had to format my hard drive after that...

But really, you can get a VERY GOOD pc setup for around 1500 euros, where you get a piece of shit Mac in performance wise ;)

And Salty, what I've seen so far about the Vista, it feels great. No complains so far, it's like upgraded version from 98, nothing else IMO.

If you can get Kaspersky Internet Security 7. It's really the best out there. Fantastic protection on literally all fronts. Can be customized to suit your needs, too :)

Another great thing about Kaspersky is the fact that it doesn't use a lot of memory. As some of you already said, Norton is a real memory hog, it will make you hate your computer

If you are looking for free antivirus, I recommend AVG and AVAST...both fantastic AVs and for some strange reason, I alternate between them year by year.

Sophos, Kaspersky and F-Secure are very good AVs if you are looking for paid protection.

F-secure is good yeah, but eats LOTS of your ram

Your best bet is AVG anti virus AND AVG anti spyware. If you're using a router I'd skip the Zone Alarm. I hate that program. It works but it just annoys me to no end. AVG is free for home use and it updates at least daily. The Anti spyware WILL expire BUT it WILL still work and update (you just have to do it manually). It works very well for me and the company I work for.

***Also, all the AVG stuff is free.***

As far as Vista goes, I've heard nothing but complaints for the IT guys I know. Try installing last years MS Office, CRASH. Try to uninstall that, better get your recovery disk out. No thanks!! :stop:

After I dumped Norton I DL'ed Avast. Free, simple, efficient, and FREE!:D

It caught well over 160 malicious files that Norton wasn't able to.

And it's F-R-E-E!

Im not familiar with AVG but so far as Ive said, I really like the McAfee. It doesnt pop up with messages like Norton did all the time saying... Norton's not fully protecting your system, please fix.

Oh, that was frustrating. Whenever you spoke with customer service, all they said was....remove and reload. I got tired of doing that several times a year. It shouldnt happen. How does a program all of a sudden stop working, I dont get it.

You really shouldn't waste your time with customer support, especially in an Anti-Virus program. Just get Kaspersky (if you're looking for commercial software) or some of the free ones suggested here and you and your computer will feel much better ;)

Any time we buy a PC at work we immediatly unlaod McAfee. It slows the machine, cost money, and doesn't catch everything AVG does. :D

I think no matter what anti-virus software you use, you should always run spyware removal software. These programs will find and delete stuff the anti-virus doesnt. I always run 2 of them because it seems one will find something the other one doesnt.

And if you get a Mac, you won't have to bother with either:thumbsup:

Kaspersky Internet Security is an amazing all-in-one package. It features protection against SPAM, malware, virus, torjans, key loggers, pop-ups, suspicious network activity etc. I can go on talking about it all day because it has served me very, very well over the past two years  :star:

That's the nice part of AVG. They have both and they are designed to work together. If you use 2 different software brands, be warned, they may not work well together and will slow your machine like you wouldn't believe. If you go with McAfee, use only McAfee, etc.

Haha , no EIR, now you're confusing DR again .

If you go with McAfee, get rid of it, and use something else while staying away from Norton

I mainly use PC-Cillin internet security, it has had some very good results on my computer(I had a crap load of problems with it a few months ago, to me AVG was not doing its job)

When I used AVG I scanned it 3 times a day to make sure all was covered and yet when I turned my computer off one night, I turned it back on and it immediately logged me out(I later found out when I brought PC-cillin that I had some 12,000 viruses that AVG internet security missed:mad:.

Well I've been touting the benefits of AVG. AVG anti-virus and AVG anti-spyware (both) are GREAT products, BUT, I've discovered that they don't catch EVERY bug. They are great tools to catch MOST things. My buddy had a bug on his machine that I just couldn't get. He did have Ad-Aware SE installed but it was out dated. I ran the update and scanned the HD. BAM caught the bugs...yes bug(s). So I guess what I'm saying is that there is really no 1 solution. The 2 AVG's work great and combined with Ad-Aware SE and safe net practices you've got a great (and FREE) setup.

Yes, I run McAffee Anti-Virus and firewall. I also run 2 different spyware programs... Ad-Aware and Xoftspy. One will catch certain things the other one doesnt. I figured that is pretty good coverage.

I subscribed to Mcaffee for years, ($70/ year or so). Last year I noticed my PC was acting up, so I ran a scan, Mcaffee would freeze, reboot run again freeze again, always on a different file, finally called Mcaffee support, they recommended I run AVG (FREE SOFTWARE). I did it found viruses Mcaffee was supposed to protect me from. I canceled my subscription! Found out my ISP provides Norton, I haven't had any problems since.

Just the opposite here. When I used Norton's, I would always have to remove it, then reload it again. This happened a few times a year. That was thier answer to every problem, remove and reload. It got to be a pain in the ... I shouldnt have to do that.

So ever since I switched to McAffee, I havent had a problem. Been smooth sailing. I still use spyware programs regardless of what brand of virus/firewall software I used.
