i must say that it was highly expected.

I was thinking the exact same thing. But there could be another reason for why Kovalainen's contract was not extended. Probably Alonso told Briatore he does not want be distracted by his team mate, and with Kovalainen he could have a lot of trouble

Nelsinho has tough challenge ahead him. Not only he is going to be compared to Alonso, but Hamilton also. Same is for whoever gets the McLaren seat...

Yes, or maybe Mclaren put De la Rosa as a second driver for doesent represent any treath to Lewis first position driver on the team.

But i think they'll hire Kov

That's really a matter of opinion. He's probably happy to be somewhere where he'll be the #1. On the other hand he's a World Class driver going to a team which has slide down the grid recently.

It can only be good for Renault. I hope for their sake that they figured out what was wrong with the car or we'll see Alonso trying to get a new seat for 2009.

they say 75mil USD for 3 yrs with a clause to terminate the contract after 1 year...this is the deal alonso has with renault

I thought Alonso's deal was 51.3 million for 2 years. That amount of money is staggering..

I heard that Heikki Kovalainen would either go to McLaren or Toyota.

My guess would be McLaren. He's an up and coming talent and I think that suits the current mood at McLaren. In a few years there could be a super group going on at McLaren.

I guess there is still confusion over Alonso. While he IS confirmed at Renault there is much debate over the terms.

...Auto Motor und Sport does not agree, saying the contract is for three years and a record $147 million retainer.

That would be a RIDICULOUS amount of money especially for a brat that may try to bail in 2009.

i am sure that this is the case. it is quite clear that Alonso and renault understand what #1 status means and how important it is. and obviously if kovalinen was to stay at renault, it would cause major conflict within the team, a situation similar to that of mclaren in the last season, except that Flav would probably prefer Alonso, and he would manage matters differently.

On the other hand i wonder if mclaren are going to change their policy next season, and make lewis their #1.
it was very clear that because of this philosophy that mclaren lost the title this year. and i have to say, had they listened to Alonso they would have definatley won.

Here are some of the other estimated salaries for Alonso.

Spanish newspapers Tuesday hailed the return of "prodigal son" Fernando Alonso to Renault and suggested the two-time Formula One champion could get a "stratospheric" salary at the French team.

The sports daily AS said the 26-year-old would receive 42 million euros (61 million dollars) a year over his two-year contract at Renault, which would make him the highest paid driver in the sport's history.

Other Spanish newspapers gave lower estimates. El Mundo said it will be a "stratospheric" salary of 35 million euros, while La Vanguardia put the figure at 25 million euros.

Marca reported Alonso would get 30 millions dollars (20 million euros), and El Pais said the "prodigal son" was looking at 16 million euros per year.

Alonso announced his return to Renault on Monday, ending speculation over his driving plans for the 2008 season. The length and conditions of the contract were not revealed.

Hey hey hey hey, what are you talking about? There are no team orders, and every driver on a team is treated equally, right?

On paper there are not team order. And the rules confirm that. But in reality, there is (depending on the team). We are not necessarily talking about something a la Austria 2003, but smaller things like strategy, upgrades etc. :whistling:
