Wickens will compete the complete 2008 World Series by Renault schedule with Carlin Motorsports.

Wickens, from Toronto Ontario, was the 2006 Formula BMW USA champion. Finished 3rd in 2007 Champ Car Atlantic Championship with 1 win. He has recently raced for Canada in the A1GP championship, taking 3rd in his first time out in Malaysia.

He definitely has the foundation to do well in the Renault World Series. But I still find it a strange switch, and he probably couldn't find anything better :wonder:

He's got Formula 1 on his mind. If he goes to Champ Car, which is where Atlantics would lead him, he has almost no shot. Look what Bourdais had to do just to get on with STR.

If he switches to WS by Renault and does well he can get a good seat in GP2, and if he does well there F1 is right around the corner.

The World Series is a definite step up from Atlantics and probably a good way to learn the European tracks before he takes a shot at GP2. Oh, and the World Series winner does get a Renault F1 test as a prize.

i agree. if you want to get in F1 then champcar is a very difficult way to get to it. WS by Renault is a great series for the drivers who are almost to gp2 and f1. Also F3 Euroseries is also a good option to get to f1.

Robert will be contesting the remainder of the 2008 F3 Euro Series along with his World Series by Renault efforts. He will join fellow North American Charlie Kimball in the series.

Hopefully he will not take his World Series luck with him.

My thoughts exactly. He is going to be one busy driver.

He sure is. Obviously Red Bull is willing to spend a whole lot of money on him this year. I guess that's a good indication of how much talent they see in him. :)

Congratulations to Robert for winning Race 2 in Silverstone. Have we seen a change of fortune?

Well, he's had his share of bad luck so I hope he can keep this new momentum going. :)

Van der Garde has run away a fair bit though in points. But you never really know with the unpredictable nature of the World Series. In 2006 Alx Danielsson scored nearly all his points in the second half of the season to win the championship. His first half was just one freak accident after another. Wrote off two complete chassis at Spa, one mechanical failure which sent him spinning out into the barriers and one as a result of being rammed by Sebastian Vettel's flying tyre.
