I figured I would write a thread on what the different colored flags represent in the Indy Racing League. There are 11 different flags used. Most of you probably already know what these flags mean.

1. Green Flag - Start of a race; start of a practice session; re-start of a race.

2. Black w/White Cross Flag - Driver has been disqualified. Scoring for them has been ceased.

3. Yellow Flag - Caution. It signals hazardous conditions on the track usually due to a wreck or some material on the track. Cars must slow down, maintain position, and yield to safety vehicles until the green flag is displayed. During a qualification session, it means the qualification attempt is halted.

4. White w/Red Cross Flag - Signals an ambulance is on the track and medical help is needed.

5. Red Flag - Race stops immediately regardless of car position on the track.

6. Red & Yellow Striped Flag - Signals that oil, water, or other substance has made the track surface slippery.

7. Black Flag - This directs a driver to proceed to the pits on the next lap and follow the race official's instructions.

8. Red w/ Yellow "X" Flag - Signals the pit area is closed.

9. White Flag - Its displayed when the leader of the race starts the final lap of the race. Also during qualifications it signals the driver has started the final lap of qualification.

10. Blue w/Yellow Diagonal Stripe Flag - Its the passing flag. Slower traffic cars must yield to faster cars.

11. Checkered Flag - Signals the end of the race. The leader of the race is declared the winner. Signals the end of a practice and qualification session as well.
