A chipped bone in his left ankle and pain in that of his right side are the consequences of a huge highside onboard his Fiat Yamaha M1. His upper body braced as he took the impact on his forearms, Lorenzo´s injuries have been limited to his lower body.
Whilst he did not ride in the afternoon session, it is possible that he will return to action on Saturday morning. With Clinica Mobile Doctor Claudio Macchiagodena surprisingly citing the fracture-less right ankle as the biggest impediment to Lorenzo´s participation.
`The big problem I think is the right ankle, where there isn´t any fracture, because at this moment the rider is suffering a lot of pain, and I´m not sure if he can be ready in time for the qualifying session,´ said the Italian expert upon his patient´s return to the Shanghai paddock.
`He has a little fracture in the left ankle, and I think we can overcome this problem because the riders are used to riding with physical injuries like this one. He´s quiet at the moment, and not angry about what has happened.´

OUCH!! That's quite the airtime! And he landed right on his face! He seems in pretty good spirits all things considered.
He's probably more upset at the fact he may miss out than the fact he's hurt.
Quite the look on Rossi's face too:eek:
I've gone down on a number of occasions, but never had a highside:wonder: That terrifies me to no end.. TC should have all but removed highsides, but we still see them all the time. Still not as terrifying as Biaggi's spill from last month that could have killed him..

He landed on his knee too. Ouch. He looked like he landed fairly well though all things considered.

Here's another highsider from Lorenzo during quali. That must have hurt too, especially considering he couldn't walk to his bike without support. :banghead:

Finally a first podium place again for Rossi since October 2007! Pedrosa took the lead and was starting to build a gap. Rossi was the only one who could respond and match his pace, he even took the lead and started to build a nice gap with Pedrosa closely behind him and Stoner hanging at around 10 seconds.
Lorenzo didn't had a very good start after he struggled to get away at the warm-up lap. Many guys started to pass him which soon positioned him around 8 place.
Near the end of the race Lorenzo started to find a good rythm and took some places back which ended him on a hard earned 4th place.
It looks like it will be close throughout the whole season between Pedrosa, Rossi and Lorenzo. Stoner was the only one of the title contenders that couldn't find the pace to follow the leaders even though the Ducati's have the highest top speed.

Fascinating battle between Vale and Dani :)
Lorenzo was a real hero today, 4th with all that pain is a really good result.
I am glad that Rossi won ...but I am much happier with the return of Marco Melandri. He finally feels much more comfortable with the Ducati and hope he can continue to improve

I missed all but the last 5 laps:rolleyes:
I imagine the race start was the best part as usual, but this one looked like a blowout! If they were that far apart by race end, I can't imagine it was that exciting.. Can I wait 'till tuesday to watch the replay?.. No!
Gotta love Vale and his win. That's the 'Due' factor coming into play for sure. And Lorenzo and all his woes?!?! Mighty fine finish young man! That kid has GUTS!
I almost ruined it by reading your post this morning FAlonso:stop::lol: Within a nanosecond I had to click out of the thread and go fishing, with hopes of being home by race start.. I should have known better:rolleyes::lol:
I would have thought that the factory Ducati's would have had their bikes dialed in by now:wonder: The season ain't getting any younger..

Stoner took the lead and ran it wide AGAIN!!! This was early on. Pedrosa and Rossi checked out and left the rest battling in back. Lorenzo did a great job to bring home 4th. Stoner was all by his lonesome in 3rd. The big battles were 1-2 and 4th. At least Stoner was on the podium.

Stoner was the first to run wide but almost everyone ran wide a few times. Lorenzo was definately the hero of the day. After another painfull highside at quali and then stalling his engine at the start of the formation lap where he stepped off his bike and tried to start it again by pushing it .. Muchos respectos

Ya, by getting it started on his own, he saved his starting position. Great way to keep his head in the game under pressure.

As it turns out, Lorenzo is in slightly worse shape than everyone thought, which makes it even more amazing that he was able to do what he did last weekend.
After returning home to Spain he was seen by world-renowned specialist Dr. Xavier Mir at the Dexeus Institue in Barcelona. CAT scans of his ankles showed a fracture of the talus (astragalus) in the right ankle, and a torn lateral internal ligament in the left ankle.
This and he just had surgury to his right forearm only 2 weeks ago for compartmental syndrome! This can be debilitating and sometimes life threatening.
He's stuck in a wheelchair for the moment, and this only gives him roughly 10 days to prepare for Le Mans:eek:
It might be time for some R&R in the old hyperbaric chamber:eek: Speaking of which, does anyone know how much they are used (if at all) by the world of motor sports??

I doubt he'll be back in shape in time for Le Mans :(
As for the hyperbaric chamber, in 2005 Darran Lindsay used it for her wrist injury in the Supersport Junior TT. I'm fairly sure it is also used in the MotoGP :wonder:

Ok, but not really amazing since a wrenched ankle can even hurt more. I've also heard motorcyclers riding a GP with much worse fractures like a broken shinbone which was hardly casted.
The toughest sportsmen to me are cyclists. When they fall at 40MPH without protection besides a helmet they don't have time to weep and have to get up right away trying to catch up the guys in front. These guys sometimes race a couple days with broken spines, wrists or colarbones.

Haha , you can not get on a bike a day after braking your spine or collar bone, but I see where you're coming from ;)

Robby McEwen won the green jersey in the tour de france with 2 broken vertebrae.

There is no difference at all between a broken bone and a fracture. A fracture is not a kind of break or a different degree of breakage. To break a bone is exactly the same thing as to fracture a bone. :D

I did a bit of research and they are not really used in motorsport, Its mainly used in NHL,NFL and football in the athletes training.

Nope, no difference. But the severity of a break/fracture could lead to varying amounts of pain and structural integrity of whatever happens to be busted.
Either way, doing anything with even a hairline fracture of the back:stop:
My back is effed up sometimes and can leave me completely useless and in pain. I don't even want to think what a broken vertebra must feel like:cry:

I don't know which time this is, but I'm sure it's recent. This boy needs to take a breather before he gets hurt.....worse.

Hahaha!! That's Vale, not Jorge:p
And he came out of it relatively unscathed:cool: That's some fancy foot-work though:lol:
