    Cool World's Cheapest Car

    In the Indian capital a auto expo is going on which started yesterday where Ratan Tata(chairman of the Tata Motors) launched the world's cheapest car TATA NANO.It is priced at $2500(Rs.1,00,000).the car is for those people who dream of having a car but cannot afford it as the cheapest car in India costs $5000(Rs.2,00,000).It has been described as the people's car.

    Following are some details on the car, which was presented at the Auto Expo in New Delhi.

    * Length: 3.1 metres

    * Height: 1.6 metres

    * Width: 1.5 metres

    * Colours Available:White,Red & Yellow

    * Engine: Rear-wheel drive, 2-cylinder, 623 cc, multi-point fuel-injection petrol engine. Engine is rear mounted. Tata said it was the first time a 2-cylinder gasoline engine was being used in a car with single balancer shaft.

    * Safety: Tata said the Nano has an all sheet-metal body, with safety features such as crumple zones, intrusion-resistant doors, seat-belts, strong seats and anchorages, and the rear tailgate glass bonded to the body. Tyres are tubeless.

    * Environment: Tata said tailpipe emission performance exceeded current regulatory requirements, and the Nano had a lower overall pollution level than two-wheelers made in India. It said high fuel efficiency (20 km/litre) ensured low carbon dioxide emissions.

    It'a a golf cart!! I heard about this just last night. They say the traffic is so bad in India that many people will stick to their mopeds etc. It's a cool idea though. There are alot of benefits to a closed vehicle, especially when it rains. I hate those wheels/tires though.

    Looks like the "SMART" car for about $20000 less, and it has a back seat!

    The first thing to go would be the pizza-cutter wheels

    The front seat frames look iffy But I guess if you're making an affordable car for the masses you need to scrimp somewhere.

    Yea, the wheels are horrible. I also doubt that they can handle the uneven / rough surfaces of Indian roads over time. Forget the spinners! Those won't even fit if you take out the doors

    But a car like that is not safe, and will only add to the congestion problem in many cities because you are making cars affordable for a much larger segment of society

    And don't anyone dare say 'Carpool', because we all know how well that works here in the west

    Carpooling might work better there since many whole families work at the same location (like call centers.) I watched a show (30 Days) about how jobs exported to India actually work in that country. (Operate I mean) Many families will be a married couple, both spouses parents, and many time siblings and cousins all in one house and most of them working for the same company. Of course like here in the West, people will want their own stuff so who knows.
