Mercedes SL55 AMG vs. BMW M6

Two great cars, but the question is as always, which one is better?

The German magazine "Auto Zeitung" decided to test both cars thoroughly and came out with interesting results.

Both cars have a top speed of 250 km / h and reach 100 in 4.5 seconds. The Merc packages 10 more bhp in its engine than the BMW, reaching a total of 517 bhp.

Although the BMW has more space, the Mercedes SL55 AMG collects vital points in engine performance, gearbox, driving dynamics, agility and control. This means that in direct comparison, the Mercedes outperformes the BMW, albeit only marginally.

    OK people, where's the champagne?

Even for a BMW crazy fan like me that is a hard choice to make. It's not a matter of which one is better because at that level both cars are of outstanding quality and performance. I think it's obviously a subjective choice of which one is better.
I have to admit that even though i'd do anything to own an M series BMW if I had the choice between these two cars I'd stop and think for a while.
I don't know. I hate to admit it but something tells me that in this case I'd go for the SL 55.. A friend has it and the car is unbelievable..
I always say that young people looking for looks and performance go for the BMW and older people looking for elegance and style go for the Mercedes. I strongly believe that in this case it's the opposite. At this age I'd go straight for the SL.. if you ask me the same question 20 years from now i'd say give me the M6..

Its extremely difficult to compare these two beautiful monsters. Fortunatly i've driven both and i've seen them race 0-60, 30-100, and quarter-mile. The SL55 is a magnificent drive but it burns rubber till the fourth gear which decreases its potential to fly (a problem that can be solved with street slicks $$$) the M6 jumps like a 45 desert eagle bullet from idle and burns only enough rubber to heat the tires and maximise hp capacity. Several different drivers exchanged places to try to prove that its the driver who is winning the race not the car. They were all disapointed to uncover that it was the V10 engine that was driving the beast and not the talented drivers. The M6 is superior in my view on all the different comarisons whether it is power, reliability, or sporty elegance. It is certainly a powerful, elegant, confident and successful man's car. SL55 owners worldwide complain about many problems that their baby suffers from which include engine heating and electrical breakdowns, major problems I doubt the M6 would encounter.

The M6 is not trouble-free . New models of BMW have extensive problems with the Steering Angle Sensor, slow IDrive Response, slow SMG gear shifts at low RPM and cold weather sensitive engines.

In the J.D. Power and Associates Dependability Study, BMW is above the industry average, amounting to 212 problems per 100 vehicles. Mercedes Benz is under the industry average, with 240 problems per 100 vehicles. The most reliable car (more than the Toyota surprisingly) is the Lexus, with 136 problems per 100 vehicles.

I also think we should include Lexus in this thread. After all, they have some really sexy voitures, n'est pas?

i have not driven the m6, but i think it would have the edge on a track, however the 55 engine is a torque monster with nearly 140 lb ft more than the m6, wich makes the better choice for road users. on the other hand the sl in almost 2 tonnes, which isnt exactly light, so when it comes to agility im pretty sure the m6 is better.

Bottom line i d take the sl every time.
