How Champ Cars Compare to F1

Champ Cars clearly don't enjoy the same amount of recognition like Formula 1, but the differences are not that large really.

Previous winners include Nigel Mansell (1993), Jacques Villeneuve (1995), Juan Pablo Montoya (1999), Christiano Da Matta (2002) and for the past three seasons, Sebastien Bourdais.

The cars themselves are powerful. Engines with horsepower in the range of 750-800 are used, that can push the car to speeds up to a whopping 390 km/h!

I enjoy the Champ Car series, but I don't think the racing is competitive, maybe it's due to the small number of cars, but I don't know, because F1 has only 22 cars and most of the races are competitive and interesting.

They should drop all those new street circuits and race on real tracks (and ovals) again.

There's just too damn many of them. Las Vegas, Houston, Cleveland, Toronto, Edmonton, San Jose and Phoenix. Drop those and you'd still have Long beach and Surfers Paradise.

I like a street circuit because I can dream that I could be out in my car doing that. (I wish) I do agree that it would be nice to see them on more real tracks. I don't get to see the races that much and I don't know the drivers that well so it's hard to follow. Also I think Houston (where I'm from) went from a real street course to a parking lot course. They race around the Reliant Center complex which is huge.

Toronto has been around longer than Sufers, and I feel it's one of the best, great speeds and multiple passing areas.

Also Edmonton and Cleveland are not street circuits.

It's really a paradox, the real racing fans don't really like street circuits, but in America there aren't many people who will drive several hours to get to an out of the way road course like Road America or Laguna Seca for a Champ Car race. Champ Car is struggling to survive and there is no disputing tha street races are more profitable, though less exciting.

Street / airfield. Tomato / Tomato.

Champcar has them as street courses at their homepage, so blame them.

I'm starting to see more why people don't like the street courses. Just so bumpy and tight. Hard to not spin or crash. It's nice for the fans to be able to be close to the action, but I watch on TV so I could care less.

Other than wrecks to break things up, there's not much room to pass. That's kind of a downer as far as the action is concerned.

    Thumbs up

I agree Luke the Surfers track is awesome, especially being there as they fly past, I was lucky enough to go round the track in Steve Johnsons V8 supercar courtesy of Dick, I still cant thank him enough for that(I was in sheer terror but heaven as well).

I love standing opposite the Inlet(apartment complex) as they come out of the chicane and head into the hairpin, sheer brilliance.

With Toronto, it was the first ever ChampCar race that I saw on TV, and loved the track, I always enjoyed the challenge of driving it in Andretti racing(game) on the PS1.
