Driver of the Year - Suggestions Needed

As this year is coming to a quick end I thought about creating a poll on Driver Database to crown the Driver of the Year 2007.

Apart from letting the visitors chose the Driver of the Year I was also thinking about some other categories. Since the people here at WRF always have such brilliant ideas how about helping me come up with some other categories.

    Ideas so far:

    * Driver of the year
    * Young driver of the year (for drivers born 1985 or later, or something like that)
    * Surprise of the year (drivers who have upped their game considerably in 2007)

I was also thinking of Female driver of the year, buth then it would be strange equality wise not to have a "Male driver of the year" eventhough I'm pretty sure the winner of "Driver of the year" for 2007 will be a guy (no, Danica won't win ). So I'm not too sure about that one...

After we've decided on the categories I will have a few weeks where people can nominate drivers for the different categories. The ten most nominated drivers for each category will then be available to vote on in the poll, which I'm planning to launch in December.

Oh, and before you all start shouting "Kimi R?ikk?nen!!!", this thread is just for coming up with categories. The actual nominations and voting are taken care of later.

    I vote for Kimi Raikkonen

Seriously though is this poll going to cover all series. For example, if it's Driver of the Year, then I have to choose between Raikkonen, Franchitti and Hartley? Or is there a poll for each series?

Dario Franchitti for sure. Won the IRL Championship and is doing very well in his NASCAR Truck/ Busch and Arca Series events.

Hmmm. Well I can think of a couple off the top of my head. I may add more as they come to me
    • Driver to overcome adversity
    • Best/Worst/Most improved hairstyle (oh, there's lots)
    • Tough luck award
    • Most off track capers
    • Most penalized

Well, I can't have one for each racing category, because that would make 200-300 polls

But I might split it up into a couple of classes, like single seaters, touring cars, sports cars, karting or something.

But at the same time it would be kind of cool to just chose one and you'll have to make a tough decision on who's impressed you the most.

And while all the "negative" awards would be fun to make polls about and vote on, it would be a bit like biting the hand that feeds me. Sure, the hand only feeds me peanuts at the moment, but you never know.

So I think I'll only go for boring positive awards.

I think an overall driver of the year and then maybe a few sub cats. like Open-wheel, stock car, bikes etc. You could go on for days overdoing it that's for sure. I would say rookie of the year but Hamilton would have to be your pick by far. Most improved and biggest suprise sound good.

Can I nominate myself for "the oldest rookie who worked the hardest to find someone willing to give him a shot" award?
