There were quite a fair number of US voters actually (70% of the site's traffic is U.S. based). The interesting thing is that the U.S. voters didn't seem to have a long enough attention span to vote for anything other than the first category though.

    Hey, I love ovals!

Dario may not of gotten this voting but he did win this...

2007 IndyCar Series champion Dario Franchitti was honored with a first-team award in the open-wheel category. The reigning Indinapolis 500 winner also won the Jerry Titus Award as the All-America Team's top vote-getter. It is the third time in the last four years that the IndyCar Series winner has won the Titus Award, which is AARWBA's highest honor.

Interesting results, some of them were of course expected. But what surprised me is that Lewis Hamilton was not chosen as 'Surprise of the Year' by what would be considered an overwhelming majority...

I agree. Perhaps people were expecting him to perform well and weren't that surprised. But I guess the real reason might be that he for some reason became highly controversial during the season and now has a large group of people who'll vote for anyone other than him....

And one reason could be that people think that he will get enough votes anyway, "let's give another driver a vote too".

Hamilton was the driver that I picked for driver of the year. I didn't expect him to perform as well as he did. I also don't think that Alonso to be as good as he was.

The only conclusion that I can come up with as to why more didn't pick him was that we all follow different forms of motorsport and people picked from what they watch closest.
