The fourth round of the 08-09 GP2 Asia Series season opened on a windy and extremely dirty track tonight after twenty-four hours of sandstorms over Qatar.

The tricky conditions, added to a challenging first taste at driving at night-time, saw Russian Vitaly Petrov set the fastest laptime in a 1:38.812. His teammate and Bahrain sprint race winner Sergio Perez clocked in a good laptime as well and finished 6th in the session.

Also in good form, Marco Bonanomi at Meritus.Mahara was second quickest in a 1:39.012 ahead of Durango?s Davide Valsecchi. The young Italian is aiming at a strong performance in Qatar in order to reduce the gap between him and championship leader Kobayashi in the drivers? championship.

The surprise of the session came from DPR?s Michael Herck who topped the time sheet for most of the session until Petrov signed his best laptime with only seven minutes to go on the clock. The Romanian eventually finished fourth ahead of iSport?s Giedo van der Garde.

Championship leaders Dams seemed to have a tougher time on the track as boththeir men Kamui Kobayashi and J?r?me d?Ambrosio finished respectively fifteenth and nineteenth, two clear seconds away from the fastest man on track.

The qualifying session will start at 8:30pm today, local time.

The track was worse. It kind of degrades quality of racing.

Vitaly Petrov had an excellent race and he was fantastic throughout the race.I think other drivers also had a decent race in spite of awkward track and weather conditions.

what i thought about the race, the opposite of it happened.Qatar is so popular in terms of racing but on the racing day the weather was unpleasant and the track also was not good at all.But still then Petrov drived very well throughout the race.

Vitaly petrov is a champion driver and no one will ever question about his ability. He was awesome in Qatar race in spite of the unfavorable condition for smooth driving.Other racers also completed the race quite nicely.
