Camponeschi's World Cup Victory Passed to Another

Tony Kart junior team member Flavio Camponeschi was stripped of his World Cup victory after failing to pass a CIK-FIA drug test. This is pretty big news in the karting world....

I read your Blog about it (very nice BTW) and I think you're spot on.

The decision , like you said, being some 51 days after his victory seems a bit fishy to me. Some one has had to push it to get to where it's at I think. I understand there are processes but he's being made an example of by the CIK-FIA and WADA.

Fine, take his license away for 6 months, fine him. But to strip him of his title because of TRACE amounts of THC is ludicrous The only "sport" that Marijuana could possibly be performance enhancing to would be a hot-dog eating contest

There's no way that kid thought to himself, "Hey! I'm gonna light up a big gagger this morning and go racing!" Sure 16 year olds aren't the brightest bunch, but c'mon...

If a driver fails a drug test during a race weekend for a substance that is on the WADA prohibited list I think it would be a farce if he wasn't stripped of the title. It's his responsibilty to stay away from those substances, eventhough the doping effects may be highly questionable.

My point is that a driver should not be in that situation, if he/she fails a drug test than he should be DQ'd before the event rather than 51 days later. A urine analysis for THC, takes a few minutes at most... Which would provide more than adequate time for race stewards to perform the test and hand out the punishment before the green flag ever flies.

While THC might be quick to test for the WADA prohibited list of substances is pretty damn huge and I'm not sure there are lab facilities at La Conca to test the samples (I don't think they were actively searching for cannabis). I don't think that could have been done before the event and I haven't read anything about him being tested before the races started.

And the 51 days later probably involves time for appeals of the analyzing of both the A and B tests.
