    Nasa

So its seems like the media cannot stop talking about the $100,000 tool bag that Mission Specialist Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper let get away from her on a spacewalk a few days ago. Looks like they only like reporting on Nasa when something goes wrong, what happened to the pride that everyone used to have about the space program?

With only a handful of Shuttle missions left (I think the trip back to Hubble is still a no go at this point), the new vehicle supposed to be ready for 2015, and trips back to the moon and finally on to mars within the next few decades, how do you feel about the future of Nasa and American space exploration?

I think Nasa is severely underfunded and the new Democratic President and Congress need to do something about this. How can we let something that as brought us so many innovations in the past and has expanded our knowledge so much operate on such a low budget?

NASA really hasn't done anything to excite public interest since the moon program. That of course is NOT NASA's fault. Our nations priorities have moved to other things since beating the Russian's was no longer a motivation. So of course NASA's budget gets cut to fud other things. Now that we are in such a mess, who cares about 50billion to go to mars? We really don't NEED to do alot of the exploration as is. (as it's not a need as much as a want) and since it cost so much there is no justification. It really sucks because I live near NASA in Houston and much of the LOCAL economy is based around NASA and the many many subcontractor jobs related to them.

Actually I think we do need to do a lot of exploration, its part of who we are as human beings, we are very curious. There are so many questions about the universe that need to be answered. The costs certainly are justified, there have been many things we use daily that have roots in the space program and the more time we spend out there, only more good things can come from it.

About the urine things, you are essentially drinking urine now and you don't even know whose it is. Up on ISS it ill go through just as much, if not more, filtration and purification as drinking water here on Earth does, so I don't understand what the big deal is.

I would agree that we get ALOT of things from the space program. Things you wouldn't even imagine. The problem lies in public interest. Most people aren't thinking about space exploration and therefore can't justify billions of $$ on that program. I personally hope that that changes. I am gearing my whole resume to work with NASA and have a vested interest in their success and future. I don't know that landing on the moon is something we "need" though. I mean yes we are curious but I mean an immediate "need." I really think PRIVATE space exploration stands a better chance at innovation. At least on some level.

That being said, the Discovery channel show "The Universe" says that the greatest question facing our future may be "Can we have sex in space?" to which I reply HELL YES and I am MORE than happy to test the theory.

"US President-elect Barack Obama's NASA transition team is asking US space agency officials to quantify how much money could be saved by canceling the Ares 1 rocket and scaling back the Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle next year. ... The questionnaire, 'NASA Presidential Transition Team Requests for Information,' asks agency officials to provide the latest information on Ares 1, Orion and the planned Ares 5 heavy-lift cargo launcher, and to calculate the near-term close-out costs and longer-term savings associated with canceling those programs. The questionnaire also contemplates a scenario where Ares 1 would be canceled but development of the Ares 5 would continue. While the questionnaire, a copy of which was obtained by Space News, also asks NASA to provide a cost estimate for accelerating the first operational flight of Ares 1 and Orion from the current target date of March 2015 to as soon as 2013, NASA was not asked to study the cost implications of canceling any of its other programs, including the significantly overbudget 2009 Mars Science Laboratory or the James Webb Space Telescope."
Hmmmmmm, sounds like they want to cut corners. Ya, it's only space travel...idiots.

I guess its hard to dump billions into space projects when the economy is collapsing. To be honest, Ive never seen the fascination of it except to put satellites into orbit but I admit, its a short sided view on my part. I get the whole advancement of human exploration but I sometimes dont see the point of it, sorry if u are into Nasa.
