    Fontana Chase Race Shortened!

Well, I saw the discussion here before, and it looks like it's starting to happen; a NASCAR race has been shortened from 500 miles to 400.

What do you think? Less of a stress test on the cars, but isn't that part of what racing is about? Is this a move to save fuel?

We never know actually what their reasons could be but I'm thinking that the economy has an effect on their decision. 100 miles is not that long in a 500 mile race. 100 miles is about 30-40 minutes taken off from the viewers which I think is not that bad.

I would think that it's about the money. Like you said, less stress on the cars, less fuel, maybe save a bit on tires. It'll be interesting to see if other longer venues follow suit.

It's a balancing act in large part because of a change announced last year, which is the uniform starting time for races. This year they all begin at about the same time, with only a handful of exceptions.
