Jeff Gordon is # 20 for the start of the race. To be honest there are some racers that I know little about and they are in the top 5 positions. How do they pick the order? Is it all through time qualifying?

That's basic to NASCAR and all events. They have qualifying. You start in the order of the time you make on your qualifying lap. It's usually done on Friday for a Sunday race.
I knew they had a qualifier I guess I just thought that somehow some racers were just put in there too. See how much attention I pay to NASCAR prior to race day!
Say you win the race before, does it automatically guarantee you a spot in the next race?
I'm sure those little-known racers are more than happy for those spots, too. Jeff Gordon probably isn't immensely concerned, if you think about it. I kind of like the way it evens the playing field a bit.
I have always been entertained by it, but I gotta say there are times when I heard of a qualifier that I might miss and really wish the times were better for some. I get that certain things play into it but still, sometimes people just get the bad luck run time and time again.
