    Family of a racer

I was posting in another thread on this forum and it got me thinking about something. Could you be a family member of a person who did racing?

I don't think I could watch if a relative of mine raced. I would be a nervous wreck worrying about crashes.

I think it's cool if one of your family members or relatives were a racer. I would have no issue watching him/her racing. Accidents could happen anywhere and not only on the circuits.

It wouldn't be easy. In ways, it's like being married to a cop or a fireman. The risks are increased that something could happen to them.

I have never had a family member race in the bigger races but my dad has raced at Daytona albeit quite a few years ago. I also went out with someone who raced on a dirt track. I loved cheering them on and watching them race.

You are correct, accidents could happen anywhere. The thing with racing is the speed at which the race cars race. It is dangerous. I would freak out.

When I was racing at Gimli, in the late seventies and early eighties, I always had a number of friends, beside my wife, who came out to the races, we usually camped at the track for the week-end.
Being rather unmodest here, but since I was usually running at or near the front of the field it made it more enjoyable for them and we always had a good time. Incidentally, before we were married, my wife was also my navigator when I competed in car rallyes.

It does sound like it would be a good time. I would still worry though. That is just the type of person I am. They drive so fast and if they ever hit the wall, I don't think I could handle that.
