For the first time since 1988 Nascar is going to change the size of the restrictor plates for the July 3 race at Daytona. The restrictor plate openings for Daytona will be 1 1/32 inches this year.

What will that do to the speed of the cars? I know that the restrictor plates make things safer but I loved it when they didn't have them. The races seemed so much more exciting.
What they are doing is opening up the size of the restrictor plates thereby making the cars faster. What will be interesting is seeing these guys adjust for it after driving with the smaller ones for years.
We may see more accidents this weekend but hopefully they will all have enough practice time to get use to how the car handles. I don't mind an exciting accident as long as there are no serious injuries.
I think they are trying to make the racing more exciting and because the cars are much safer now, they can afford to lessen some of those earlier guidelines.
