World rally champion Sebastien Loeb captured his third career Race of Champions title, defeating Formula One driver David Coulthard in the final.
Loeb, who did not compete in last year's event, needed a third and deciding race to defeat the retiring F1 driver. After winning the first heat in RoC buggies, the Scotsman evened things up in the X-Bow cars, winning by just under a second. The third and final race saw Loeb narrowly defeat Coulthard in the RoC buggies by just 3-10ths of a second.
"It's not too bad to be beaten by a five-time world rally champion," Coulthard tells autosport.com. "I'm just happy to have made the final with so many good drivers here."
Aside from the finale, the highlight of the event came in the second round when NASCAR Sprint Cup runner-up Carl Edwards defeated seven time F1 world champion Michael Schumacher.
"It's amazing, it feels like I've won a championship - I'll never forget that moment as long as I live," Edwards told autosport.com. "Just the chance to be able to race with him, and fortunatley to be able to beat him."
Edwards would lose out to Coulthard in the semifinals but not before the Scotsman made it close by crashing into the wall on the final corner of the last lap of their race. Thankfully, his lead over Edwards was sufficient enough for him to get back on track and cross the finish line less than a second ahead of the American.
In the Nations Cup portion of the event, Germany captured the title for the second straight year. The duo of Michael Schumacher and Sebastian VEttel needed three races to defaeat the Scandinavian duo of Mattias Ekstrom and Tom Kristensen.
In the third and deciding race, Schumacher faced Ekstrom in a rematch of last year's individual final. This time out the German came out on top.
