F5000 to race at Aussie GP

This seasons F5000 Tasman Revival Series has been extended to six rounds having gained a postion on the support card for the 2009 Aussie F1 GP. With an average of 20 cars per round and the likelyhood of up to 30 cars could appear in Melbourne in March, the big thundering 5 Litre stock blocks from the 70's could steal the show from the F1 boys as best single seaters to watch. The series is currently lead by the evergreen 67 year old Kenny Smith in a Lola T430 inhis 51st consective year of racing and with Canadian Jay Esterer and young English driver Michael Lyons having taken wins in recent rounds, these thundering monsters from the past are not being driven around in a sedate display but are lapping the circuits at times quicker than they did in the past.

Alot of the drivers that drive these historic cars are just your enthusiastic amateur who can afford to own and run these cars, but Kenny has been running at the top level of single seater racing down here every year since starting in the days of Stirling Moss. This season he has stepped back from the premier class to concentrate on the F5000's which was an era he truely enjoyed and had great success in. There are a few young drivers that are driving these historic cars and willing to drive them hard but as Kenny showed at Pukekohe when he duelled with Canadian Jay Esterer that he still knows how to make the big booming F5000 go quick as they lapped on record pace.
