An earlier thread talked about Formula 3, which I had never heard of before. So does that mean there's also a Formula 2, which I've also never heard of?

There are several Formulas, 1, 2 and 3, all open wheel cars with F1 being the biggest and most powerful ones, while F3 is pretty much an entry level formula into the sport, then progressing to the large and more powerful F2.
There are also various brand related formulas, such as Formula Renault, Ford, Mazda and V (VW) where all the engines are derived from modified stock engines. Over the years F Atlantic (close to F2) and Formual Junior (using motorcycle engines) and other formulas have come and done, only to reappear sometime a few years later.
Back in the fifties and sixties it was not uncommon for some F1 drivers to also compete in the F2 championship (a bit like NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers racing in the Nationwide serie). In fact Jim Clark (arguably one of the greatest F1 driver) died in April 1968 in Hockenheim, Germany while practicing for a F2 race.
