New Zealand is one of the classics in the WRC season and its fast, smooth and cambered gravel roads make it one of the favourites with drivers too. It?s based from the town of Hamilton, 130km south of Auckland, close to the North Island's west coast and right in the heart of some spectacular undulating countryside which makes the stages fast, flowing and similar in many ways to those of Rally Finland.
Tho the roads are smooth, there is still much more loose gravel on roads than in Finland, and we will see tactics by teams to achieve better starting positions for day 2 and day 3. This was seen on day one when the championship leader Loeb "accidentaly" stalled his car at the SS6 and got 30 seconds time penalty and now Hirvonen is cleaning the road for second day of the rally.
Results after 1st day:
Code:1. Mikko Hirvonen Ford 1.34.44,3 2. Sebastien Loeb Citroen +27,8 3. Daniel Sordo Citroen +30,0 4. J-M. Latvala Ford +30,1 5. Francois Duval Ford +1.27,9 6. Urmo Aava Citroen +2.01,3 7. Petter Solberg Subaru +2.25,8 8. P-G. Andersson Suzuki +2.50,5
