    Laptop or Desktop?

Laptops are becoming more and more the standard workstation for the home enviornment. I've been using a laptop for more than three years now, and I'm really happy. It's powerful, plays most games, great mobility and battery.

What's also nice is that it's really quiet. I remember back in the day when my desktop's fan used to sound like a car radiator

    What do you use?

Either, depending on where I want to go. If I want to do something really quickly, it's normally the laptop.

Desktop is the only one I've ever used. I've had the computer for a few years now and don't use it enough to upgrade to a laptop. Still use dial up as well.

Desktop, but I'm thinking of getting a cheapish laptop sometime soon. Just for some basic web work so price is more of value than performance.

Both. I have a very powerful desktop that is sitting there at the moment. Nice laptop I got in 2000-ish that works great, got another pretty nice desktop that is the "community" computer. I work on the computer so it's pretty important for me. I like the mobility of my laptop. I can do my work anywhere. I DID have to get a real mouse for it though.

Ok, now I've purchased my laptop. I've been looking on and off for something realtively cheap and this Sunday I saw an ad that one of the large home electronics stores in town were moving into new and bigger buildings and were having a sale on Monday.

So at 6:45 am I was there with 15 minutes to kill before opening hours, thinking I could sit and wait in the car for a bit. Oh no. There were atleast 50 people standing in line outside the store so I had to go out in the cold and stand in line.

Anyway. I got in at around 7.15 (they only let 20-30 people in at once to stop people from killing each other or something) and ran towards the laptop section and grabbed a box.

I ended up with a PB with 1.7 Ghz Intel Dual Core, 2 Gigs RAM and 160 Gig HDD for under 5000 SEK (approx. 530 Euro or US$ 770).

It seems to be quite decent, of course it's far from the fastest around but I have no intention of using it for the heaviest apps available. Getting a decent amount of RAM was more on top of my list of demands.

I'm not a big fan of Windows Vista though.

Congratulations! Those are some very solid specs for a real good price .

I got a Vista Capable Laptop about a year ago with a Gig RAM less than yours (rest are similar specs) and to this day, I have yet to upgrade to Vista. Although the Nvidia 7 series could handle the Aero, I don't want to waste my memory on shiny UI graphics, when they could be used for my applications. I'm going to stick with my system until the 3 or 4 GB RAM become mainstream in notebooks (and until an upgrade would really make a difference ).

What you should do is hook up an additional screen and use the Nvidia MultiView. When you're multi-tasking a lot, two screens are fantastic (the regular laptop one and the additional, in my case Samsung 19 inch wide).
