Does it say what exact codec is not installed? Can you play the movie in the regular Windows Media Player?

This is what it come up with:
cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again.
And yes it plays fine in windows media player.

You may need the decoder software for that file type. Alot of things will play with a codec but need a different decoder to edit.

Since DivX is the most widely used codec, also in F1 videos, I recommend you download it from the official website, close all applications open and install it.

Then restart your computer and let me know if it works

The DivX package has that included. Don't remember exactly, but it worked for me . You can even save using the DivX compression alogrithms

Close all applications and then run the installer. After the installation is complete, restart your computer and try running it in WMM again

A good program to find out which codecs are needed for a video file.
