    My Computer Keeps Rebooting Itself

Well, I know Im bringing up an old thread but for awhile now my computer keeps rebooting itself. Crash, reboot, repeat. Happened a lot there for awhile. Ive tried different things. I have had the memory changed, drivers updated, etc.

Well, yesterday morning I went to turn it on and it wouldnt power up completely. The best I could do was get it to the desktop and then it would freeze.

So its in the shop now. I should have it back in a couple days so I can only access the net from work now. I am now in the process of saving for a new imac.

    Sometimes I hate computers...

Sudden reboots could be a power supply problem. When I first started running two graphics cars in mine the power supply was really on the limit and as soon as my DVD-burner started spinning up it would just give up and reboot. A bit annoying but a new power sup with more Watts fixed that.

But then again it could be 1,000 other problems as well. Computers are lovely.

No doubt. Well, when it first started doing it, the error message would say a device driver one time and then say a hardware device. It always pointed to a video driver or device so I am assuming its something to do with the video card but then I could be wrong.

I have downloaded the latest drivers for my video card. Its an ATI by the way and its not that old of a card. Just over a year I believe. Which is enough to be out of warranty.

    You're running Windows XP?

And does the error come after a certain time? For example, you left you're computer off all night, you start it up, and things get messed up say after 15 minutes? If that is the case then it could be that your cooling fan is either blocked or damaged. This causes the graphic processing unit to pick up a lot of heat, thus causing system instability

No, its random times, although quite frequent crashes. Yes, I am running XP. It seems to happen quite a bit when Im on the net for some reason.

We've covered this before I think but no matter, we're here now What are you using for AV? I recall you ditching Norton. If you haven't, do it Sometimes I found that Windows Update can mess with how things run too. Check that you turn auto-updates off, and check them when it's convenient for you.

Or just do like me and get a Mac No crashy. Uber fast. Easy and fun to use. Just no games I do still rely on the PC for certain things I've yet to figure out.

*Sorry, lost my train of thought. I forgot that you said it re-boots persistently.... I suggest drowning it!

    XP or Vista??

Either way DR, me thinks you may have to get off your wallet and either do a major overhaul/upgrade, or just get a new unit

I may have to look for a new(er) PC to complete the 'circle'

Yeah, Im using McAfee for anti-virus. But the anti-virus and my spyware programs find nothing except the usual trackers and stuff that are deleted. Im hoping its only one of the windows updates that is conflicting with my ATI video card. If I can only be so lucky...

Im not a PC gamer so the IMac will be great for me.
