    Worst F1 Accidents (Non-Fatal)

Formula 1 has witnessed many horrible accidents.

One accident that is well known is Niki Lauda's at the German Grand Prix in 1976. He suffered serious burns and had inhaled large quantities of toxic smoke. Surprisingly, he was able to stand right after the accident, but fell into a coma a few minutes later. A preacher was even called in to read last rites

Fortunately though, he survived and even managed the Jaguar team for a while. He is now an F1 expert for the German television station RTL

Which ones do you remember in particular?

Please do not post any fatal crashes

In terms of how many cars were involved, I think SPA 1998 comes high up in the list.

I can still remember watching it live thinking "Wow".

Geeze, looking at all the fire, that's pretty crazy. What's always amazed me is the speeds and how deaths are quite rare in crashes. People going down the highway at 45 could wreck, and both be killed, but I see racecars hit each other at 200, and everyone just walks away.

Martin Brundle's 1996 shunt at Melbourne was shocking. The car was completely destroyed, and this picture says a lot

He walked away with no injuries.

Austrian driver Gerhard Berger had a horrible accident at the 1989 San Marino Grand Prix in Imola. Running flat out, something broke in the Ferrari causing him to veer straight into the wall.

The car was full of fuel because the race had just started, causing Berger to be engulfed in flames. It took 23 seconds for the marshals to take him out of the wreckage. Luckily, he escaped with only minor burns

Martin Donnelly, testing at Jerez 1990

Martin Donnelly's F1 career ended with a terrible crash during testing at Jerez. His Lotus hit the barriers (probably due to a mechanical failure) and the front of the car disintegrated. The rear end was torn off and Donnelly thrown out on the track with the remainder of his seat still attached to his back.

Donnelly suffered a concussion and serious leg injuries. He didn't come back to F1 but started his own racing team and has made some appearances in historical racing since then.

That's nasty! Whereabouts on the track did this happen? Have they done anything with the run-outs in the past 15 or 20 years?

A lot has changed at Jerez in light of the ongoing safety efforts by the FIA. The track is still actively used, but in F1 it's only for testing.
