    Slowest Drag Race

Riverside Raceway 1968: Two A/A fuel dragsters broke on the starting line. to advance to the next round one had to cross the finish line first. The rules didn't say the cars had to be occupied, just that no outside help could be used to assist. Both drivers got out of thier cars and began pushing them to the end of the quarter mile. One passed out (track temp was 135) the other crossed the line and won.

Does anybody remember the date and or/the drivers names?

    I found it!

First and Only Top Fuel pushing contest!
March 24 - 1968 - Riverside International Raceway, Riverside California
    Hot Rod Magazine Drag Races.
Bill Dunlop (far lane) beat Walt Stevens (near lane) to the finish line after both lost fire at the starting line. Dunlop pushed his car the entire way while Stevens collapsed just short of the finish line. The track temperature was 135 degrees and the NHRA rules required them to wear their full fire suits boots and helmets.

its quite unbelievable that a driver collapsed while pushing his car towards the finish line.the temperature of the track was about 130 degrees which is sufficient to collapse Walt Stevens.it is really a courageous act to get out of the car and push it to the finish line under the bright sun at 130 degrees.

I really like drag races but never heard of any type of slow drag races like this one before. It was a very funny site as both the drivers were pushing their cars over the finish line.

Drag races are very cool. They make me feel very excited. But the one you presented doesn't even sound like a drag race. It is more like a walk in the park. )

Wow! This is the most unique sounding finish I have ever heard. Would have been fun to watch. Everyone must have been on their toes when seeing this live.

I guess all the spectators were very bored to see the cars running so slow. But what can you do when the car has a problem? They have set a good record for the slowest drag race.

I'd never heard about that race before. That sounds like something out of a movie.

I've never been to a drag race and the last few I've seen on TV have been on shows that feature accidents during the races.

Are funny cars still as popular as they used to be?

I don't know about you but I avoid walks in the park at 135 degrees, especially in a full fire suit. It just goes to show the true heart of the racer though. The most important part of any race is crossing the finish line.
